Amazingly, those same people when playing nearby at San Francisco GC will say the completely opposite thing. I struggled mightily and came away with the impression that this venerable U.S. Open venue was too difficult to be enjoyable for most of us. You will also not be allowed to participate in any other sports programs or enter the fitness center without a membership. But, the core four courses for the USGA and the US Open is quite clear -- Oakmont, Shinnecock Hills, Pebble Beach and Pinehurst #2. Both are strong par-4's because the terrain accentuates even the tiniest of miscues. Clearly, that has since changed with the architectural updating by Gil Hanse and the USGA's green light to LACC in hosting the 2023 championship. Even from an elevated tee the green is pinched in towards the front and again well served by flanking bunkers. Short par 4 #7 is one of the jewels, Pros will be able to hit the green but if on the wrong platform be sure you will 3 putt. On the bright side, Olympic Club only has one fairway bunker. Mr Ward, putting aside the debate over the merits of the Lake course I have to point out that you are simply incorrect when you claim that the USGA elected to not have the Olympic Club host another US Open. At 13 I hit the worst shot of the day, hooking an 8 iron from center of the fairway to left of the bunkers. Really. I don't know if you are aware but clubs interested in hosting a prospective US Open must formally apply to the USGA to get the process started. Sadly it's a diamond in the rough and could be top 15 in US if they did a proper restoration. Set on the seaward side of the hill is the Ocean course, which also belongs to the Olympic Club. The burgerdog at the turn is one of the best halfway house "musts" in golf. The first time I played the famous Lake course at The Olympic Club in 2009 was a true slog. There's more room to the back but anything long will need Houdini's assist to escape with par. There has been relatively little change in the course since 1927 and only one hole has been outright replaced; and the old hole 8 was probably the least challenging hole of the course before, now it's a challenging hole with a good set of bunkers and if the flag is in back you definitely need to shape your shot to get near the pin.
