Mental health social workers are faced with many challenges about their role and contribution and struggle with tensions and ethical dilemmas in day-to-day practice. Previous studies (Peck and Norman, 1999; Walshe et al., 2003; Berry et al., 2007) have demonstrated that mental health social workers experience a range of ethical challenges, particularly in relation to medication, such as supporting the rights of clients to refuse medication. There has been a move towards evidence-based interventions (Health Ministers of Australia, 1992) but social workers have reacted to this movement with uncertainty (McCrae et al., 2004). This intervention illustrates the key practice principles of cognitive remediation for schizophrenia and how these principles were extended in innovative directions by a social work–led multidisciplinary team to arrive at a uniquely holistic, empowering, and effective intervention for people with the condition.
