There was nothing wrong with the tape or thinner and I can only guess that the grips didn't allow the thinner to evaporate fast enough allowing the grip tape to be compromised and get gummy. I'm going to assume you maybe used too much solvent, or some residual solvent got under the tape at the butt end and didn't cure long enough and dry out? My guess is that you have water-activated tape strips and they aren't compatible with any grip solvent.
